What is a Kölsch?

Kölsch is a traditional beer style originating from Cologne, Germany. It's a pale, slightly fruity, and highly attenuated beer with a clean, crisp finish. Kölsch is often described as having the best characteristics of both ales and lagers: the fruity notes of an ale combined with the crispness of a lager. This makes it an ideal beer for those who enjoy a light, refreshing drink with subtle complexity.

Brewing Instructions

Sanitisation

Start by thoroughly cleaning and sanitising all your brewing equipment. Proper sanitation is crucial to avoid contamination and ensure the quality of your beer.

Boiling

Fill your brew kettle with approximately 10 liters of water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, add the malt extract from The Brew Shop ESB 3 kg Kölsch Kit. Stir well to dissolve the extract completely. This malt extract provides the base for your beer, imparting the characteristic light malt flavor of a Kölsch.

Hop Addition

Add the hops included in the kit according to the provided schedule. hops are added at different times during the boil to contribute bitterness, flavor, and aroma. The Brew Shop kit includes hops that are carefully selected to complement the Kölsch style, providing a delicate balance of bitterness and floral notes.

Cooling

After the boil, cool the wort (unfermented beer) quickly to around 18-20°C. You can use an immersion chiller or an ice bath to achieve this. Rapid cooling is important to prevent the growth of unwanted bacteria and to prepare the wort for fermentation.

Fermentation

Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermenter and add the yeast from the kit. The yeast strain included in The Brew Shop ESB 3 kg Kölsch Kit is chosen for its ability to produce the clean, crisp flavors typical of a Kölsch. Seal the fermenter with an airlock and let it ferment at around 18°C for about two weeks.Conditioningbottle the beer with priming sugar to carbonate it. Allow the bottles to condition at room temperature for another two weeks. This conditioning period lets the flavors mature and the carbonation develop.
