Stainless Steel Ball Valve ½" BSP — The Workhorse Fitting Every All-Grain Brewer Needs

A ball valve sounds like a small detail. In a brewing setup, it's anything but. This KegLand stainless steel ball valve with ½" BSP thread is the fitting you'll reach for every time you transfer wort, drain a mash tun, connect a pump, or plumb up a kettle. One quarter turn opens or closes the flow completely — no drips, no fussing, no plastic valves that deform under heat or stain from wort contact.

Plastic valves crack. Brass valves taint. Stainless does neither.

Why Stainless Steel Matters in a Brewery

In a food and beverage environment, material choice is everything. Stainless steel won't leach metallic flavours into your wort, won't corrode when exposed to caustic cleaners or acid-based sanitisers, and won't soften or warp when hit with boiling liquor. It's the same material used in commercial breweries and distilleries for exactly these reasons — and this KegLand valve brings that same standard to the home setup.

  • Food-safe 304 stainless steel construction — no flavour pickup, no corrosion
  • Full-bore ball design for unrestricted, high-flow transfer
  • Quarter-turn operation for instant open/close flow control
  • ½" BSP thread — the standard connection size for most homebrew kettles, fermenters, and pumps
  • Easy to disassemble and clean to maintain hygiene between brews

Where Homebrewers Use This Valve

The ½" BSP size is the most commonly used thread in Australian homebrew setups, making this valve a straight swap or direct fit across a wide range of equipment. Typical applications include fitting to kettle and mash tun outlets for wort transfer, connecting to March or centrifugal pumps in recirculating mash setups, plumbing between a hot liquor tank and mash tun, drainage on fermenters or conical vessels, and building custom brew stands and multi-vessel systems.

How to Install

Thread the valve directly onto any ½" BSP female fitting using PTFE (plumber's) tape on the male thread to ensure a watertight seal. Tighten firmly by hand and finish with a wrench — avoid over-tightening on stainless-to-stainless connections. The valve can be fully disassembled by removing the handle nut and withdrawing the ball for thorough cleaning when required.

Good to Know

BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the thread standard used in Australia, not to be confused with NPT (National Pipe Thread) used in the USA. Before purchasing, confirm your existing fittings are BSP to ensure compatibility. If you're building a new system from scratch, BSP is the recommended standard to keep all your connections consistent and easy to source locally.
